Nineteen Restaurant is housed in one of York’s oldest buildings on Grape Lane, just a couple of minutes walk away from the city’s famous Minster. It dates back to the fifteenth century and the restaurant combines old world charm with modern furnishings to create one of the city’s most atmospheric dining experiences. Chef/Proprietor Phill Upton has worked in various two- and three AA-rosetted restaurants around the York area and opened Nineteen in June 2007.
It can accommodate 40 diners over two floors and table 9, with its view along Swinegate, is one of the most sought after tables in the city. The food at Nineteen is Modern British with a European twist and there is a choice of menus – the Epicure a la carte menu and the set Market Menu. Fresh ingredients from local suppliers are used wherever possible.
Nineteen is available also for private parties, weddings and outside catering events.
Nineteen is possibly York’s oldest restaurant, as records show this very building has been used since the fifteenth century. 19 Grape Lane has seen a variety of businesses throughout the last five hundred years, most recently as a restaurant since the 1970’s, before that as a residential home, a wholesale fruit merchants and in the 1850’s it was a coaching inn known as the Bloomsbury Inn, not to mention its past as a house of ill repute!. In the Victorian era Grape Lane was actually named Grope Lane in reference to the many brothels that brought the red light to the street.
19 Grape Lane was renamed Nineteen Restaurant in 2006 and refurbished to a high standard providing a relaxed, stylish and contemporary restaurant without detracting from the character of this almost six hundred year old building.
Nineteen Restaurant is now run by Chef Proprietor Phill Upton, who has previously worked in two and three rosette kitchens nationwide. Nineteen Restaurant offers a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, with simple, traditional British food with a modern twist, using fresh local ingredients from local suppliers.
